Early in 2017, The Pot Place Garden Centre acquired an old school building from Abbeytown School near Wigton (now known as Holm Cultram Abbey CofE School). The building is prefabricated and was designed and made in Finland before being installed at Wigton shortly after the Second World War.
When it was no longer required by the school, we took the opportunity of taking it apart and re-erecting it on site at The Pot Place Station Yard. It helps that we have a team who work on garden buildings on a regular basis, but this was a significant project as the Schoolroom is much bigger than most garden buildings and also needed a raised site and the addition of steps and ramps to keep it level and also accessible.
Visitors to the Tea Room love the additional space and room to move in the Schoolroom and it’s particularly popular with families. Older visitors enjoy the memorabilia from school days past and it’s ideal for bigger groups or even private functions.
At Christmas, the Schoolroom is a great place for before or after a visit to see Father Christmas and we enjoy putting up a tree and adding decorations. We’ll soon be getting ready for Christmas 2018 and hope that visitors will enjoy refreshments in the Schoolroom when they visit too.
